sophisticated dragnet with the nsa, the reason we got this is because al qaeda held a conference call. [laughter] please press mute. >> you have to be listening to get it, collecting information. >> i agree, a lot of it has been driven by not needing another benghazi on their handsand also the president pulled back, saying we do not want to be perpetually at war. well, we will be perpetually at war. >> charles mentioned in sa. -- the nsa. now that vladimir putin has granted asylum, the president says we will not have a meeting. what is your take? >> this is a collapse of the reset. obama came into office saying that relations with russia had been allowed to drift. under the bush administration -- and find that it was our fault. he was going to warm them up. he caved on missile defense in europe. he thought he would get cooperation on iraq, syria, arms control, and he has been stymied and humiliated every time. this was the final straw. it was a gratuitous poke in the eye, and he finally had to show some gumption in canceling that. he is still showing up in russia for the g-20 conferen

world today. her family never had a say in this. why did the nsa seek its buy-in now? >> what happened this year is different. hela cells, yes, have been used in almost every laboratory, including my own. now what we've had happen is read out the complete d.n.a. instruction book, the genome of hela cells, laying out all kinds of details about why those cells grow so rapidly, but also revealing something about henrietta's original d.n.a. instruction book, which,sh, has implications for the family, and her blood relatives raised concerns, rightly so, that this information being freely available on the internet might be placing them at risk for people learning things about their medical risks for the future, that they would like to keep private. >> warner: so this agreement you negotiated with the family, what does it grant them? what does it give them? >> well, over three long meetings in the evening in baltimore with the family-- and i give them a huge amount of credit for rallying together and dealing with some pretty complicated scientific facts-- ultimately, they are very mu

, royal baby. >> rose: so it's not slow. >> no, it's been nasdaq, nsa, anthony weiner, incredibly ridiculous. >> rose: the gift that keeps giving. >> that's right, which cannot not give. >> rose: yes. >> but there were momentsment like two shows in particular, a pretty hard to navigate when it's feelings of complete despair. the trayvon martin verdict i felt personally very, you know, it's very difficult. there's a lot of emotion. and even more so i felt that was the first time i really felt john's absence. >> we the jury find george zimmerman not guilty. >> holy fuuch. so he's innocent 1234 wait, what? how could that possible-- you-- you have got to be-- there's no-- i can't even-- oh my god! (laughter) which i guess is what we'll call tonight's segment. (laughter) because that feels about right. that feels in your heart about right. the audience often looked to jon to make them, to help them articulate very complicated, painful feelings. and something like the trayvon martin verdict would be a moment where i could feel in the audience people are looking to jon. they're not looki

that nsa leaker edward snowden provided proof of the nsa's record of breaking privacy rules thousands of times. the agency says these were mistakes, not willful violations of the rules, and the white house tonight says the documents show the nsa is catching and reporting its own mistakes. >>> still ahead on "nbc nightly news," an nbc news exclusive. we return to the mountains of idaho with the riders who gave authorities their big break about the kidnapping of hannah hander son. >>> and later, news of a secret revealed after decades of speculation about what really went on inside area 51. g all th. it was very painful situation. i'm very athletic and i swim in the ocean. shingles forced me out of the water. the doctor asked me "did you have chickenpox when you were a child?" the pain level was so high, it became unbearable. for over 30 years. and it's now the most doctor recommended, the most preferred and the most studied. so when it comes to getting the most out of your multivitamin, the choice is clear. centrum. i took my son fishing every year. we had a great spot, not e

the nsa, edward snowden, is a patriot and released a series of reforms he would like to implement. here is how the president described what he would like to do. >> we can't and must be more transparent so i directed the intelligence community to make public as much information about these programs as possible. we have already declassified unprecedented information about the nsa but we can go furter. >> and asked about who he'll pick for the next chairman of the federal reserve he said he didn't want to tip his hand of who he would pick but has two candidates and explained why the white house was defending larry summers in public. take a listen. >> the perception that mr. summers might have an inside track simply had to do with a bunch of attacks that i was hearing on mr. summer's preemptively, which is a standard washington exercise that i don't like. >> reporter: so tyler, obviously, this is very personal for the president. he has a relationship with larry summers. he didn't like to see the piling on. that might explain leaks we saw over the past couple week complaining that larr

know, i have been learning more about the this nsa spying scandal. what are the odds that the only emails and phone calls the nsa didn't listen to are anthony weiner's? what are the odds? [ laughter ] you know, i love how two years ago when weiner resigned, he said more embarrassing pictures may come out in the future. [ light laughter ] do you know how he knew that? 'cause he went home after that and sent them. [ laughter ] that's how he knew. that's how he was able the to predict the future. [ cheers and applause ] well, did you hear weiner's latest defense? he said, "what politician doesn't send out junk mail?" okay. [ rim shot ] [ laughter ] you know, i know we are all used to seeing vain politicians. we just don't need to see their veins. okay. [ laughter ] that's the problem. anyway, after admitting to sending pictures of himself to a woman a year after he quit congress to supposedly seek treatment, he now says it's all in the rear-view mirror. [ light laughter ] well, that's something you don't want to see, huh? [ laughter ] bad enough seeing his junk on your iphone. [ screa
